A De Havilland Mosquito being armed for an anti-shipping strike mission. Although designed as a reconnaissance aircraft using high speed to evade interception, the Mosquito proved successful in a variety of roles.

As more and better equipment began to arrive in Egypt in late 1941 and 1942, so the methods of Arthur Coningham’s Desert Air Force in support of the Eighth Army began to improve; these lessons, learned in the heat and dust of North Africa, would pay dividends during the invasion of Europe in 1944. RAF units later participated in the invasions of Sicily and Italy, where progress almost came to a standstill. The Italian campaign is best remembered for the tragic destruction of the monastery at Monte Cassino, which was bombed in support of Allied troops and which ironically served mainly to impede the advance of the Allied infantry.
